This handbook was developed and first printed in as one of a series of three handbooks for persons preparing for certification as an airframe or powerplant mechanic. This handbook is not intended to replace. Are You Career Training Ready? Some schools offer a diploma and others may require that you already have a high school diploma or a General Education Diploma GED to apply. Required areas of study in the "general" curriculum include electricity, technical drawingsweight and balancehydraulics and pneumaticsground operation of aircraft, cleaning and corrosion control, basic mathematical calculations, forms and record-keeping, basic physicsmaintenance manuals and publications, and applicable federal regulations. This handbook is not intended to replace, substitute for, or supersede official regulations or the manufacturers' instructions.

FAA certification does not necessarily mean universities will extend college credit nor does it indicate approval by other states or federal agencies. After you graduate, you will be qualified to take the required FAA's written, oral, and practical exams. This activity must be accomplished every 12 months even though the renewal period is every 24 months. Most work in eight-hour day, evening and night shifts, with the best schedules going to those with the most seniority. Many schools also offer avionics courses that cover electronics and instrumentation.
